GENESEE COUNTY, MI – A driver is suspected of impairment following a two-vehicle collision early Wednesday in Flint that seriously injured another person, according to CBS News Detroit.

The incident took place early Wednesday on northbound Interstate 75 near Miller Road. Flint Township police said an officer had been called to the area at around 1:30 a.m. after receiving multiple reports about an occupied vehicle stopped on the side of the roadway with its hazard lights activated.

A preliminary investigation indicates that before the officer could arrive at the scene, the stopped vehicle was struck from the back by a semi-truck driven by the suspect.

The impact, which seriously injured the 29-year-old occupant of the stopped vehicle, also caused the semi to overturn and collide with the median.

The seriously-injured occupant of the stopped vehicle and the semi driver, who reportedly sustained minor injuries after crews removed from the vehicle, were both transported to an area hospital after receiving treatment at the scene.

Authorities had part of the roadway closed for an extended time during the investigation and crash clearance.

At this time, alcohol is believed to have contributed to the collision.

LAPEER COUNTY, MI – An SUV overturned into an Elba Township creek last Saturday evening, July 13, an incident that ultimately claimed the lives of three people, including two children, reports ClickOnDetroit.

The collision took place in the area of Lippincott Road and Lake Nepressing Road, at about 8:43 p.m.

According to the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office, a 32-year-old Waterford Township woman was driving a 2021 Buick Enclave eastbound on Lippincott Road with her two sons, ages 12 and 9, in the vehicle. At one point, she drove past the center line in an attempt to pass a car. The maneuver caused the Buick to run off the left side of the roadway, strike a guardrail, and then overturn into a nearby creek, where it became submerged.

Authorities arrived to find only the vehicle’s back tires visible from the water’s surface.

While crews were able to remove the victims from the vehicle, the woman was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Her 12- and 9-year-old sons were transported to McLaren Lapeer Region Hospital and Flint’s Hurley Medical Center, respectively, where both children also later died.

JACKSON COUNTY, OH – Three students and a driver were injured Wednesday morning, July 10, after a school bus hydroplaned and collided with a semi-truck near Jackson, reports CBS News Detroit.

The incident took place on the westbound lanes of Interstate 94 near U.S. Highway 127 (Exit 138). Michigan State Police troopers and Blackman Township officers were dispatched to the scene at around 9:30 a.m.

According to preliminary details, wet road conditions and speed appeared to have caused a Jackson County Intermediate School bus to hydroplane and lose control. Shortly after, the bus crashed into a semi-truck, and the impact caused the semi to strike the median wall and for the bus to overturn onto its side.

Officials say in addition to the driver, the bus was occupied by 11 special needs students and an attendant at the time of the rollover.

First responders had the driver and three students transported to an area hospital for unspecified injuries.

It’s unclear whether the driver of the semi was hurt.

An investigation remains in progress, and inspections of the bus and the semi-truck are expected to be conducted by the Michigan State Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division on Thursday, July 11.

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI – A two-vehicle crash that claimed the lives of two people Sunday evening, July 7, in Brighton appears to have been caused by a street race, according to ClickOnDetroit.

The fatal wreck occurred on a stretch of Old U.S. Route 23 at Loch Lomond Road, at around 6:40 p.m.

Michigan State Police said a trooper observed two motorcycles engaged in an apparent race and traveling at high rates of speed just north of Grand River Avenue. As the trooper tried to make a U-turn, he witnessed, from his rear-view mirror, one of the motorcycles colliding with the passenger side of a minivan, which had made a left turn onto Loch Lomond Road from the southbound road.

While the striking motorcyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, it was not properly affixed and did not stay on during the impact. Both the rider and a passenger in the van, a 64-year-old Fenton woman, were pronounced deceased at the scene.

Authorities said the second motorcyclist fled the scene after the crash.
