WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI – A 17-year-old Saline boy died early last Saturday, July 20, following a high-speed collision at an Ypsilantic car dealership that left another teen seriously injured, reports MLive.
Michigan State Police said the fatal accident happened at Fischer Honda, located at 15 East Michigan Avenue, after an 18-year-old driver sped away from Pittsburgh Township police.
A preliminary investigation indicates the teen was behind the wheel of a black Dodge Charger when they failed to stop for a traffic stop. While on deputy maneuvered to prevent the speeding vehicle from crashing into other vehicles, they were unable to get close enough to the fleeing vehicle to identify its license plate.
Officials said the Dodge Charger was no longer being pursued when it collided with a fire hydrant and then nine vehicles that were parked at the dealership. The impact caused the Dodge to flip multiple times, throwing two passengers, a 17-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl, from the vehicle.
First responders pronounced the 17-year-old boy deceased at the scene. The 15-year-old girl, of Ann Arbor, was rushed to University of Michigan Hospital for severe injuries.
While the driver tried to flee the crash site on foot, he was apprehended and taken into custody. The extent of his injuries was not immediately clear, but he was also transported to the hospital.
An investigation remains underway. At this time, drugs and alcohol are not believed to have contributed to the wreck.
