PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP, MI – Three people lost their lives Wednesday morning due to a wrong-way wreck on State Route 14 in Plymouth Township, reports CBS News Detroit.
The accident happened on the westbound lanes of M-14 at Gotfredson Road, near the Wayne and Washtenaw County border.
A preliminary investigation by the Michigan State Police shows a 31-year-old Battle Creek man was driving a 2024 Nissan Rogue westbound on the eastbound highway. At one point, he tried to exit using the eastbound entrance ramp from Gotfredson Road. Moments later, the Nissan collided head-on with a 202o Tesla, which was entering the highway from Gotfredson. The impact of the collision caused the Tesla to catch fire.
The driver of the Nissan and his passenger, a 27-year-old woman, also of Battle Creek, were both pronounced deceased at the scene.
Officials confirmed that the driver of the Tesla, a 53-year-old man from Munith, also succumbed to his injuries.
Due to difficulty managing the “thermal blaze” brought on by the crash, crews were forced to place a blanket on the top of the Tesla to contain the flames and let it run its course after removing the victim.
The ramp remained shut down until about 12:20 p.m.
An investigation remains underway. It’s unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.
