Tragically, three children have now passed away after a car accident involving a red pickup truck and a horse-drawn carriage. The carriage was carrying seven people at the time that it was hit by the truck.
The crash happened on Friday, June 7. A six-year-old child and a two-year-old child both passed away at the scene of the crash. A four-year-old child had life-threatening injuries and was rushed to the hospital for treatment, but the child passed away from those injuries a few days later, on June 10.
Five of the passengers in the carriage were children and two were adults. All were thrown out of the vehicle. A woman suffered serious injuries, as did a three-year-old child.
According to the state police, the driver of the truck was a 21-year-old man from Indiana. They claim he was intoxicated when he caused the accident. He had been at a funeral after a friend died and was coming home.
He has been arrested. His bond was set at $500,000 and he is facing numerous charges for causing death through intoxicated driving. He also has felony weapons charges against him.
These types of accidents are not new in Michigan. Back in 2015, a similar accident between an Amish buggy and a vehicle led to injuries to three different children and a woman. The woman died from her injuries.
