Michigan man continues recovery from crash that killed wife, son

A 38-year-old Michigan man continues to recover from injuries he suffered in a March 9 crash that killed his wife and their 3-year-old son.

And recently, the other driver involved in the crash – a 55-year-old Illinois man – was arrested on felony charges in connection with their deaths. He was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence, causing death, as well as operating under the influence, causing an incapacitating injury.

The family, who lived in Lowell, Michigan, was traveling west on Interstate 96 in the early evening. Police said the Illinois driver crossed the median before colliding head-on with the family's car.

The man's wife, 36, was pronounced dead at the crash site. The child died after being taken off life support a few days later once his organs had been harvested.

The man suffered injuries that were so severe that he had to be placed in a medically induced coma in the immediate aftermath of the crash. He didn't know right away about the deaths of his wife and child.

"It's going to be a long, long healing process for him. Being sedated and the surgeries that will take place for the broken bones, arms and legs and so on," his uncle said in the days following the accident.

The victim is in the midst of that healing now, and he has been helpless as he has watched his medical bills pile up, along with funeral expenses and costs to maintain his home while he's away. His financial losses are immense, and there is no price tag that can be put on the loss of his family. The man is entitled to recoup many of those costs, and an attorney can assist with that process.
