Teen drives into traffic during 'Bird Box' challenge

Even if you haven't seen "The Bird Box," you've probably seen the memes. Full of images of a blindfolded woman and her children, or blindfolded people in general, as they try to navigate everything from the woods to a rowboat.

As always, there are a few people who -- for whatever reason -- take the hype a little too far. Netflix, the movie's creator, even felt compelled to publicly ask people to stop trying to test their ability to navigate the world while blindfolded in various "Bird Box challenges." Unfortunately, at least one Utah teenager didn't get the message.

The 17-year-old, with a 16-year-old passenger in tow, crashed a car into oncoming traffic and then careened off a light pole while driving blindfolded. Gratefully, no one was seriously injured.

This is just the latest bit of foolishness that police have had to address on our nation's roads. A few months ago, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) had to urge motorists of all ages to stop participating in the "In My Feelings" challenge that had people hopping out of moving cars and doing a quick dance step while the car continued to roll.

There's something about seeing something done in a movie, in a music video or in a meme that makes people forget that they can get seriously injured -- or injure others -- with their antics. Negligence behind the wheel is a very serious matter. One accident can leave many different people's lives in ruins. If you're injured in a motor vehicle accident due to another driver's irresponsible stunt, find out more about your right to claim compensation for your losses.
