The symptoms of a painless detached retina

If you get into a car accident and hit your head, you run the risk of suffering numerous types of head injuries. These may include things like a skull fracture, a concussion or bleeding on the brain.

One of the most potentially catastrophic injuries that can happen in a car accident is a detached retina. When this is left untreated, it can lead to blindness and vision loss that is irreparable. Ignoring the symptoms puts you at serious risk for a life-changing disability.

One of the biggest issues with a detached retina is that it can be completely painless. You may already be dealing with a lot of pain after the crash, so you could overlook symptoms that do not hurt. In the long run, though, those symptoms could have a drastic impact on your quality of life.

So, what should you watch out for? Three potential symptoms are:

  • Loss of peripheral vision. The edges of your vision may grow darker and make it harder to see.
  • Floaters appearing in your vision. Even if you had some before, you may see many new dark shapes or flecks appearing to move in front of your eyes.
  • Flashes of light. Even if there is no visible source, a person may see periodic, random flashes.

Remember, you may experience all of this without any pain. However, that does not mean you shouldn't take it seriously. You could suffer from vision loss for the rest of your life. You need to get medical treatment as soon as you can, and you need to know what legal rights you may have to financial compensation.
