Troubled nursing home to shut down in July

A troubled nursing home in New Jersey will close its doors for good by July 16. The nursing home, known as the Mount Laurel Center for Rehabilitation & Healthcare, has been on the list of the country’s most troubled facilities for 19 months and has shown no improvement.

The nursing home made the announcement about the closure itself, saying that it has lost certifications from both Medicare and Medicaid. The nursing home also noted that it would go dark on June 16, 2017, which it did. The nursing home used to be part of the Centers Health Care Family, which also operates homes in Hammonton and Deptford, New Jersey. The company is headquartered in New York.

All patients will be transferred to other facilities by July 16. This is when payments from Medicare and Medicaid to the facility will cease. Any patients admitted after June 16 will not receive federal payments.

According to a spokeswoman, the New Jersey Department of Health has been at the facility often to monitor the care of the patients. A filing with the New Jersey Department of Labor reports that some 323 people will be out of work with the facility closing its doors for good. The company noted that its other two locations in New Jersey are completely staffed and will not be adding staff members from the closing Mount Laurel location.

Despite the company saying staffing is at adequate levels at its two other New Jersey locations, a study by the Philadelphia Inquirer found otherwise. The study looked at the nurse staffing levels in the Philadelphia area. The study found that the Deptford Center had the sixth-lowest staffing level related to the hours per day required by federal regulators.
