Know the signs of traumatic brain injury

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can lead to serious complications for the patient and even death. If you have been involved in an accident at work, school or on the road, symptoms can develop immediately. There are times where symptoms do not manifest until days, weeks or months after the injury occurred. Here are the signs of traumatic brain injury.

If you have suffered a mild traumatic brain injury, the symptoms of the injury can include any of the following:

- Headache

- Nausea or vomiting

- Loss of consciousness for a couple of seconds to a couple of minutes

- No loss of consciousness, but in a state of confusion or disorientation

- Sleeping more than normal

- Drowsiness or fatigue

- Loss of balance or dizziness

- Trouble sleeping

- Blurred vision

- Ringing in the ears

- Difficulty with smelling things

- Change in taste

- Mood swings

- Memory issues

- Feelings of anxiousness or depression

If you have suffered a moderate to severe brain injury, the following symptoms can present themselves:

- Persistent headaches

- Loss of consciousness for several minutes to several hours

- Seizures or convulsions

- Repeated nausea or vomiting

- Loss of coordination

- Draining of clear fluids from the ears or nose

- Pupils dilated

- Fingers and toes experiencing numbness

- Inability to wake from sleep

- Combativeness

- Coma

- Slurred speech

- Confusion

Children who have suffered a brain injury will exhibit some of the following symptoms:

- Loss of interest in toys

- Change in nursing or eating habits

- Change in sleep pattern

- Change in ability to pay attention

- Difficulty being consoled

- Easily irritated

- Depressed or sad mood

A brain injury is nothing to gamble over, which is why you should see a doctor immediately after an accident.
