The disadvantage of living in a snowy climate is having to risk a serious injury every time you step outside. This is particularly for vehicle owners in Michigan who have to drive every day. There are certain steps that they must take to avoid accidents and injuries.

Reduce walking outside

Prevent slips and falls from happening in the first place. If you know that ice and snow are abundant outside, try to stay inside as much as possible. Avoid walking to the mailbox, walking back and forth to a car or exercising outdoors until it’s entirely safe to do so.

Slow down

The most important step for preventing winter injuries is to slow down. Reduce your speed, apply your brakes early when stopping and leave early to reach a destination to give yourself plenty of time.

Take detours

Be prepared to take detours when driving to your normal destinations. Take alternative routes where the roads are less crowded or less slippery. The risks of crashing increase when you encounter traffic jams on icy roads or drive through the city during snowstorms.

Avoid traffic

Drive during the least busy times of the day and week. In some cities, the roads are less crowded in the early morning hours with barely any cars there. In most cities, rush hours start at 7:00 a.m. and again at 3:00 p.m. and last for two to three hours.

Prevent serious injuries this winter

Most winter injuries occur when walking or driving outdoors. However, you cannot avoid every icy road or find a shortcut for every trip you take. The main tip is to slow down when driving and avoid making trips unless it’s necessary. Also, give yourself additional time to reach your destination.
